A ventilation device and a method for mountinq a ventilationdevice TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to a ventilation device according tothe preamble of claim 1 and to a method for engaging such adevice with a ventilation duct according to the preamble of theindependent method claim. ln particular, the invention relates toventilation devices including an air supply and exhaust valve or adiffuser for mounting in e.g. ceilings where acoustic structuralbuilding elements are used, such as in schools, restaurants, offices, stores, libraries, etc. Acoustic structural building elementare here to be understood as sound absorbing soft plates madefrom e.g. mineral wool.
BACKGROUND AND PRIOR ART Common ventilation devices used for air supply and exhaust inbuildings comprise a tubular valve housing, also known as amounting frame, and a valve unit such as an air supply andexhaust valve or a so called diffuser. The valve housing isconfigured to be mounted in an open end of a ventilation duct. Anaperture is provided in a structural building element, such as in aceiling of a room, where the ventilation device is to be mounted. The valve housing is engaged with the open end, and acircumferential brim provided on the valve housing is positionedsuch that it abuts a front side of the structural building element,i.e. the side facing the room. The valve unit is thereafter mountedin the valve housing. A spring holder, a bayonet holder or the likeis commonly used for securing the valve unit in the valve housing. The valve unit is pressed into the valve housing and the holderengages with grooves or depressions in the valve housing, thuskeeping the valve unit in place. A circumferential rim of the valve unit should after mounting hide the brim of the valve housing andprovide acoustic insulation as well as an aesthetically pleasingappearance.
However, mounting of ventilation devices in ceilings comprisingacoustic structural building elements is often difficult toaccomplish with an aesthetically pleasing and functional endresult. lf the brim of the valve housing is mounted too close to thefront side of the building element, the ventilation device may aftermounting lift the building element with respect to a frame in whichit is mounted, and shading effects occur. lf on the contrary thebrim is placed too far away from the front side of the buildingelement, there will be a gap between the valve unit and thebuilding element, resulting in poor acoustic insulation andinaesthetic shading effects.
DE102005028781 attempts to solve these problems by providinga fixing device configured to keep the brim in contact with thefront side of the structural building element during mounting ofthe valve unit. The fixing device comprises spring units mountedon the valve housing intended to press on a back side of thebuilding element. However, a problem with this fixing device is itslack of versatility, for example with respect to differentthicknesses of the building elements.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION lt is an objective of the present invention to overcome the abovedefined problem and provide an, in at least some aspect, improved way of ensuring that a valve unit is properly positionedwith respect to a structural building element.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, this objectiveis reached by means of the ventilation device initially defined, characterised in that the fixing device comprises a strap configured to be mounted around one of a tubular main portion ofthe valve housing and the ventilation duct, and at least twopressing members mounted on said strap, wherein, when thestrap is mounted behind said structural building element, thepressing members are configured to press on a back side of thestructural building element such that the front side is pressedtoward the brim.
The ventilation device according to the invention comprises a veryversatile fixing device which can be easily adapted to differentthicknesses of structural building elements by simply mountingthe strap at an adjusted distance from the circumferential brim. The building element is thereby efficiently fixed with respect tothe brim and the ventilation duct, independently of the thicknessof the building element. Since the fixing device is not integratedwith the valve housing, it is possible to mount it either around theventilation duct or around the valve housing, depending on theapplication. The ventilation device is thereby very versatile.
According to an embodiment, the pressing members are in theform of brackets. Brackets are space efficient and provide anefficient way of fixing the building element with respect to thebrim.
According to another embodiment, the fixing device comprisesthree pressing members. This ensures a stable fixation with threecontact points around the ventilation duct or valve housing.
According to another embodiment, the strap is a self-lockingcable tie. Such a cable tie is easy to mount and lock and its lengthwhen formed into a loop around e.g. the ventilation duct caneasily be adjusted to fit different ventilation duct diameters. Sincethe cable tie is open before mounting, it is easy to mount aroundthe ventilation duct with the structural building element already inplace.
According to another embodiment, the pressing members arefreely movable along the length of the strap. This can be achievede.g. by providing the pressing members with passages throughwhich the strap is passed. ln this way, the fixing device can beeasily optimised for different ventilation duct diameters.
According to another aspect of the invention, the abovementioned objective is reached by means of the method initiallydefined, which is characterised in that the step of fixing thestructural building element comprises mounting a fixing devicecomprising a strap and at least two pressing members mountedthereon around one of the ventilation duct and the valve housingbehind said structural building element, such that the pressingmembers press on a back side of the structural building element. The pressing members thereby prevent movement of thestructural building element in an axial direction of the ventilationduct.
The method according to the invention facilitates the installationof ventilation devices in spaces wherein acoustic structuralbuilding elements are used and ensures that an aestheticallypleasing and functional end result may be achieved. Furtheradvantages and advantageous features of the proposed methodappear from the above discussion in connection with theproposed ventilation device.
According to an embodiment of this aspect of the invention, thestrap is a self-locking cable tie, and mounting the fixing devicecomprises forming said cable tie into a loop such that a self-locking is achieved. This is an easy and efficient way of fixing thebuilding element with respect to the brim.
According to another embodiment, the fixing device is beingmounted before mounting the valve housing. lf mounted aroundthe ventilation duct, the pressure applied when mounting the valve housing does in this way not destroy the positioning of thestructural building element.
According to another embodiment, the fixing device is beingmounted around the ventilation duct. This enables fast and easymounting of valve housings and valve units and is suitable for allapplications in which the valve housing is inserted into andattached in the ventilation duct.
Further advantages and advantageous features of the inventionwill appear from the following detailed description ofembodiments of the invention.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The invention will now be described by way of example withreference to the appended drawings, in which: Fig. 1 shows a cross section of a ventilation device accordingto an embodiment of the invention, andFig. 2 shows a perspective view of a ventilation duct with the ventilation device in fig. 1 mounted therein.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS OF THEINVENTION A ventilation device according to an embodiment of the inventionis schematically shown in cross section in fig. 1 and in perspectiveview in fig. 2. The ventilation device comprises a tubular valvehousing 1, which has a tubular main portion 2 and acircumferential brim 3 protruding from the tubular main portion 2.lt further comprises a valve unit 4 with an adjustable platemember 5 and a frame member 6. The valve unit 4 is mounted in the valve housing 1 by means of a spring holder 7, which isengaged with a transverse groove 8 provided in an inner wall ofthe valve housing 2 and thereby keeps the valve unit 4 in place. The ventilation device further comprises a fixing device 10comprising a strap 11 and three pressing members in the form ofbrackets 12 mounted on said strap 11. The strap 11 is e.g. aplastic or metallic strap such as a self-locking cable tie. Thebrackets 12 are threaded onto the strap 11 and are thus movablealong the length of the strap 11.
The valve housing 1 is here mounted in and attached to an openend of a ventilation duct 9 using attachment means (not shown). The ventilation duct 9 extends in an axial direction around acentral axis C, which is common with the valve housing 1. Theventilation device is mounted such that the valve housing 1extends through an aperture provided in an acoustic structuralbuilding element 13 having a front side 14 and a back side 15. Aback side 16 of the brim 3 abuts the front side 14 of the buildingelement 13. The fixing device 10 is mounted around theventilation duct 9 with a first portion 17 of each bracket 12abutting the ventilation duct, and with a second portion 18pressing on the back side 15 of the building element 13. The fixingdevice 10 thus prevents relative axial movement of the structuralbuilding element 13 and the ventilation duct 9, since it keeps thebuilding element 13 sandwiched between the brackets 12 and thebrim 3. ln the method according to an embodiment of the presentinvention, the proposed ventilation device is engaged with theopen end of the ventilation duct 9 provided in the aperture of thestructural building element 13, e.g. in a ceiling. According to themethod, the structural building element 13 is first fixed withrespect to the ventilation duct 9 by means of mounting the fixingdevice 10 around the ventilation duct 9 behind the buildingelement 13, with the brackets 12 pressing gently on the back side15 of the building element 13. The valve housing 1 is thereafter inserted into and attached in the open end of the ventilation duct9 with the circumferential brim 3 abutting the front side 14 of thestructural building element 13. Thereafter, the valve unit 4 ismounted in the valve housing 1. A circumferential rim 19 of theframe member 6 hides the brim 3 after mounting of the valve unit4. The fixing device 10 keeps the structural building element 13in place during mounting of the valve housing 1 and the valve unit4 and ensures a functional and aesthetical end result.
The invention is of course not limited to the embodimentsdescribed herein. On the contrary, many possibilities tomodifications thereof will be apparent to a person with ordinaryskill in the art without departing from the basic idea of theinvention such as defined in the appended claims. For example, the pressing members can have different shapes, and it ispossible to use another number of pressing members. Thepressing members and the strap can also be integrated. The strapcan preferably be a self-locking cable tie having a length suchthat it can easily be formed into a loop around the ventilation duct, but also other sorts of straps can be used. ln the method according to the invention, the order of the stepsof mounting the different parts of the ventilation devices can bevaried. lt is also possible to have a valve housing into which theopen end of the ventilation duct is insertable, instead of theopposite situation described above. ln this case, the fixing devicecan be mounted around the valve housing to keep the structuralbuilding element in place during mounting of the valve unit. Alsoin the case when the valve housing is inserted into the ventilationduct, it may for certain applications be advantageous to mountthe fixing device around the tubular main portion of the valvehousing.
